Badminton Racket First Impressions: Yonex Armortec 700 (2nd Gen)

The is the racket made famous by Lin Dan when he was playing for Yonex. It's known for it's stiffness and extreme head heaviness.

And true to that, this racket proved unyielding as I took it to court. The clears and smashes came off pretty well, but the softer touches were sacrificed for them.

Drops and net shots were horrible for me, and the defense was one kind of slow. Lifting the head up to block shots became cumbersome and I see myself putting blocks I'd usually execute well into the net.

It'll take some time to tame. Correction: it'll take a lot of time to attempt to tame.

Stay tuned.

Lin Dan was using the 1st edition of AT700 which is dark red in color. Very similar shade of red to AT900P.

Apparently, the 2nd edition is not the same.

Yup, he was.. I couldn't get my hands on the original, so I make do :)

Terribly hard to get started with.. do you have any experiences with the 1st Gen AT700?

Yes, I remembered my friend was looking for it and search for it through out Singapore before he found one and that was back in 2008 ! I believe there's no more stock at least in Singapore unless Sunrise has a bunch locked away.

I tried it before and it is stiff and head heavy. The N90 feels very close to it.

I like the way the N90 feels... but the 2nd Gen AT700 is a little too loose at the head and leads to problems in defending and net play...

How does the N90 compare to the AT700 2nd Gen? I'm thinking of getting one of them.

Arthur said...

As of now, the AT700 is nowhere close...

What qualities does the N90 have which the AT700 lacks?

Arthur said...

It's more stable; weight distribution plays a big part in my choice of the N90 over the AT700.

The AT700 is way too head heavy for me to properly use.

So you're meaning the AT700 2nd Gen is more head heavy than the N90? Which would mean a more offensive racket?

Arthur said...

Offensive to me means I get the shuttle on land on the other side more, and the N90 performs better in that aspect since it's got better control for me.

The AT700, not so much.

I see, what about power wise? Which is better?

N90.

I see, I heard durability issues on the AT700 such as the grommets sinking into the frame. Have you experienced them before?

Arthur said...

Can't say I have.

I see, thanks very much for your opinions! Appreciated! :)

Glad to be of help!

Sorry, I still have a last question in mind. Which racket, AT700 or N90, has more head heaviness and a higher balance point? Thanks very much!

Arthur said...

That would be the AT700.

I see, so can I be safe to conclude that the AT700 head heaviness to too much for you therefore you can generate more power with the N90?

Arthur said...

It contributes to the loss of control, so that's why I prefer the N90.

I see. Thanks very much!

Juz struggling between at700 or n90.which of them is better

Arthur said...

Why are you struggling? The game should be enjoyed :)

Might want to share a little more on what you expect from the racket and how you intend it to play for you.

Too little info and all I can say is "get the one with the better color scheme."
